NCAA MMOD wasn't the only online college basketball story this week, as video platform provider NeuLion announced that it is powering the NAIA's men's and women's basketball tournament, also now underway. But whereas NCAA MMOD has pursued a free, ad-supported model, the NAIA games are only available through a subscription, with the full package running $40.
As Marc Sokol, NeuLion's EVP of Marketing told me earlier this week, NeuLion has made a push into streaming live college sports, now partnering with over 130 schools, including heavyweights like Duke, LSU and University of Oregon. In the first half of March - the heavy conference title period - NeuLion streamed over 400 games. Marc explained that the typical setup is for the school to provide a video feed to NeuLion which it in turn makes available to subscribers under 1, 4 and 12 month plans. Separately, NeuLion, a public company, reported its full 2010 results this week. Revenue was up 18% to $33.2 million while the company's net loss, including $6.2 million of non-cash charges was $17.2 million, vs. $19.6 million a year earlier.
