Rovi is announcing its "Rovi Media Cloud" for consumer electronics companies and service providers to fully capitalize on the proliferation of connected devices. The rollout, following Rovi's recent move to acquire Sonic Solutions, underscores Rovi's march to become the premier provider of "under the hood" services that will transform connected devices from clever gadgets into a full-blown video and services platform.
Rovi Media Cloud includes APIs to access advertising, metadata, recommendations, media recognition, search and management/analytics modules. As CE companies and service providers increasingly need to differentiate their products by delivering ever more powerful consumer experiences, they'll be able to quickly use Rovi Media Cloud services to deploy them. This is extremely valuable for CE companies in particular which have little in-house experience with developing software and services.
One of the key themes of this year's CES is the connected future, where content is easily discovered and moved seamlessly from one platform to the next. It's an exciting vision, but one that requires significant cloud-based underpinnings (this was a key theme of Cisco's Videoscape yesterday too). Rovi is making a strong bid to bring together all the pieces necessary.
