Sorenson has released Squeeze Server 1.5, an enterprise transcoding solution. The key new feature is support for Adobe Dynamic Streaming and Microsoft Smooth Streaming, in addition to Apple HTTP Adaptive Streaming which was already supported. As a result Squeeze Server 1.5 can now optimize for all three of the primary adaptive bit rate streaming platforms.
The new release underscores content providers' desire to target mobile devices and also to deliver higher-quality video. Adaptive bit rate streaming is crucial for mobile because it auto-adjusts the quality of the video sent depending on variable mobile network conditions. Similarly, for larger, high-quality video files, adaptive bit rate streaming seamlessly reduces quality when required network capacity isn't available.
Among other features included, Squeeze Server 1.5 emphasizes cloud delivery; transcoding processes can run from an enterprise's server closet, data center, and on various clouds like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. A range of encoding parameters, or presets, is also included in the Preset Exchange, to more easily encode for various formats and devices.
