Yahoo is announcing a new live news program anchored by the company’s global news anchor, Katie Couric. The new show, called Yahoo News Live, will air daily at 1 p.m. ET.
“Yahoo News Live will provide perspective on the stories that are trending around the nation, and often the world,” the company wrote in a blog post describing the new program.
Some may think this an effort by Yahoo to get their money’s worth out of Couric. Last month Couric renewed her contract with Yahoo and upped her salary from roughly $6 million annually to $10 million, according to Re/code. A former anchor and correspondent for NBC, CBS, and ABC news, Couric joined Yahoo in 2013 to head up an interview and news program.
Yahoo’s live news announcement comes just days ahead of a press conference the company is hosting to reveal a new consumer product. Though it’s uncertain whether or not the new product will focus on news (live or otherwise), it’s likely to be related to the company’s interests in mobile, video, native, or social.
