Please join me in Miami Beach next Tuesday, January 25th when I'll be doing an exclusive one-hour interview with Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos at the annual NATPE Market conference. The session is sponsored by William Morris Endeavor. The NATPE Market conference runs from next Monday to Wednesday at the luxurious Fontainebleau Resort.
Ted is Netflix's point person for the company's lengthy list of recent content deals (e.g. EPIX, Disney/ABC, NBCU, Relativity Media, etc.) that have powered the popularity of Netflix's streaming service. Among the topics we'll discuss include how Netflix decides what type of content to pursue, how these deals are typically structured, how big Netflix's budget is for ongoing content acquisition, which connected devices are most popular for Netflix streaming use, which competitors he's most worried about, and what's on the roadmap for 2011 and beyond.
Ted will gaze into his crystal ball and give us some thoughts on where the industry is headed, how Netflix will position itself relative to incumbent pay-TV operators, and whether cord-cutting will take hold. Coincidentally, the interview will occur just a day before Netflix announces its Q4 '10 and end-of-year results. Though the odds are against us, we'll see if we can squeeze any sneak-peek info from him, like whether Netflix will report 20 million year-end subscribers. Ted was on my VideoSchmooze:LA breakfast panel last June, and I thought he was refreshingly candid. There will be plenty of time for audience Q&A as well.
In addition to Ted there are many other terrific speakers and sessions at this year's NATPE conference including Cameron Death (SVP & GM, Digital Content, NBCU), David Eun (President AOL Media and Studios), David Freeman (Co-Head, Brand Group, CAA), David Goldberg (Chairman, Endemol North America), Mindy Herman (Chief of Content and Digital, Redbox), Jim Louderback (CEO, Revision3), Joy Marcus (GM, Dailymotion US), Doug Scott (President, Ogilvy Entertainment), Ben Silverman (Founder and CEO, Electus) and Sir Martin Sorrell (CEO, WPP), among others.
If you're focused on monetization and distribution of online and mobile video, then NATPE is a must-attend event. A bonus of this year's show is the new Miami Beach location (hint, hint, fellow Northeasterners whose teeth are currently chattering!).
