thePlatform has announced that is powering 2 new SVOD services, shomi in Canada and Stan in Australia. shomi was launched in late 2014 by Canadian pay-TV operators Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications. Stan is a join venture of Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media Limited.
Both SVOD services are using thePlatform's mpx video publishing system for video workflow, metadata management, purchasing support through a payment gateway, subscriber management and viewing rights enforcement, and automated publishing across devices and video players.
shomi is currently in beta for Rogers and Shaw broadband or cable subscribers, with plans to expand to other operators. Stan is available for $10 per month and includes programs such as "Better caul Saul," "Transparent," and "Mozart in the Jungle" (the latter two are on Amazon in the U.S.). Stan has rights to other movies and TV shows from Sony Pictures Television, MGM, CBS, Viacom International, BBC, ABC and SBS.
Both shomi and Stan are among the many SVOD services being introduced globally. Netflix just launched last week in Australia and has been up and running in Canada for several years.
