  • NewFronts, Upfronts and the Battle for Video Ad Budgets [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]

One of the highlights of the recent Video Ad Summit was a session including Jackie Kulesza, SVP, Director, Video, Starcom MediaVest and Adam Shlachter, Head of Media Activation, Digitas LBi, focused on the NewFronts, Upfronts and future of video ad budgets. The discussion was driven by Jim Nail, Principal Analyst at Forrester Research.

Adam and Jackie provided a wealth of insights into how video ad buying has evolved at their agencies and how they believe the market will work down the road. They provide perspectives on the NewFronts, where video ad budgets are being sourced from, how clients' strategies are changing and much more. For anyone looking for the agency perspective on online video advertising, it's a very worthwhile 35 minutes.

  • Deep Dive Into Mobile Video Advertising [AD SUMMIT VIDEOS]

At last month's Video Ad Summit, mobile video was a big topic of conversation. Kicking off the day, eMarketer's principal analyst, David Hallerman, walked the audience through his firm's online video ad forecast, including the mobile component, which it estimates will quadruple to $5.44 billion by 2018, over 44% of of total online video ad spending (the full forecast is available for complimentary download here).

Later in the day, Jim Spencer, president and founder of Newsy (an ad-supported mobile video news app acquired earlier this year by E.W. Scripps) led a spirited panel on how media and technology companies are keeping up with mobile video's surging adoption. Joining him on the session were Ashish Chordia (founder & CEO, Alphonso), Jason Krebs (head of sales, Maker Studios), Rebecca Paoletti (CEO and co-founder, CakeWorks LLC) and Canaan Schladale-Zink (VP, Sales North America, Sizmek).

Videos of each of the sessions follow below.

  • Case Study: Quiznos Toasty.TV and the ROI of Branded Entertainment [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]

Connecting with consumers has become harder than ever for brands. Fortunately, online video has opened up a whole new opportunity for brands to act more like publishers than advertisers, doing more storytelling than just advertising. A prime example of a brand that recognized this and developed a winning branded entertainment strategy is Quiznos, which launched "Toasty.TV," a destination for original and curated video.

Toasty.TV hit it big with its first original video, "House of Thrones," a hilarious mashup between Netflix's "House of Cards" and HBO's "Game of Thrones" generating almost 1.6 million views to date. In this case study presented at the recent Video Ad Summit, Quiznos' VP of Advertising and Marketing Chris Ruszkowski and agency partner Moz Miraba from Windowseat, detail the strategy behind Toasty.TV, how it reached its core millennial audience and the specific results it has driven.

  • News Corp's Head of Video Explains How Video Has Transformed the WSJ [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]

At the recent Video Ad Summit, I sat down with Rahul Chopra, News Corp's SVP/global head of video and Chief Revenue Officer of Storyful, which was recently acquired. Rahul has been a key executive behind the Wall Street Journal's highly successful online video strategy and implementation.

As Rahul explains, the Journal is now producing 150 hours of video per month, delivering 50 million streams across 35 different platforms. Content is created from every one of its international bureaus, which is released and promoted on a 24-hour cycle to match audience interests.

From an ad sales perspective, Rahul details how video is now part of a holistic go-to-market approach which advertisers are responding to. Inventory has been sold out for a long time and CPM are still rising and are very strong (Rahul would only share the numbers with me privately, but they are eye-popping).

  • "TV is Video, But is Video TV?" [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]

One of our early sessions at the recent Video Ad Summit was "TV is Video, But is Video TV?" which included Doug Knopper (Co-CEO, FreeWheel), Peter Naylor (SVP, Ad Sales, Hulu), Fred Santarpia (EVP, Chief Digital Officer, Conde Nast Entertainment) and Dan Suratt (EVP, Digital Media and Business Development, A+E Networks), with me moderating.

The question is highly relevant as it influences how ad spending will evolve and how pay-TV's value proposition will be perceived given the proliferation of online originals. Our panelists offer a range of perspectives, with some consensus that if it's long-form, high-quality, rights-managed and brand-safe online video, there's no practical difference vs. TV. One data point that Peter shares - that 62% of Hulu's content is now viewed on connected TV devices - underscores how mainstream online video viewing has become.

  • Land Rover Case Study: How Online Video Drives "Mid-Funnel" Success [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]

After a short medical leave last week, I'm back in the saddle and have many new videos to share of last month's Video Ad Summit. One of our morning case studies focused on Land Rover and how online video advertising can be used for "mid-funnel" success - combining the best of video's branding reach with the potential of direct-response advertising's lead generation.

  • TV is Video, But is Video TV?

It wasn't that long ago when the term "TV" had a clear, universally understood meaning - a type of programming (e.g. entertainment, sports, news, weather, etc.) that was viewed on a screen typically located in a living room/bedroom/den/kitchen/etc.

Flash forward to today and things are much more complicated. TV programming is, of course, still a form of video, but how about all the different original online video that is now being produced - should some, all or none of it be considered "TV?" What criteria should be used to decide how to classify it and who decides? Does the definition differ by age group? And perhaps most important - does it even matter - is the concept of something being considered "TV" still relevant?

  • IAB to Present Viewability Session at June 25th Video Ad Summit

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) will be presenting the final session of the June 25th VideoNuze Online Video Advertising Summit in NYC. The session title is "Viewability: Addressing the Elephant in the Room."

As the title implies, if there is one major hiccup in the rapid growth of online video advertising, it's that a significant percentage of online video ads are either not immediately viewable by audiences, are fraudulent or are both. Over the past year, the topic has gained a lot of attention, creating a widening credibility gap for the industry.

However, a ton of work has been done to remedy this and in this session, you can expect a deep-dive discussion of specific initiatives, 3MS, the roles of all players in the ecosystem and what comes next. The timing is perfect since the "gating period" for the new video viewability standard will lift on June 30th.

We're very fortunate to have as panelists David Gunzerath, SVP and Associate Director of the Media Rating Council, which has been a leader in solving the viewability challenge, Tal Chalozin, CTO and co-founder of Innovid, one of the first 5 companies to participate in OpenVideoView ("OpenVV"), created to open source video viewability measurement, and Julian Zilberbrand, EVP at Zenith Optimedia, who has been deeply involved in moving viewability forward. We'll likely have one more panelist, and Matt Prohaska from Prohaska Consulting will be the session moderator.

The IAB has had a leadership role on this critical industry issue, and worked closely with other leading industry organizations. I'm thrilled they've chosen to collaborate and present this timely session at the Video Ad Summit, adding to a jam-packed program covering the hottest industry topics. IAB members receive a $100 savings on registration using the Media Partner ticket type and code IAB14.
