  • Final Reminder: "Sizing Up the Apple TV Opportunity" Webinar is Tomorrow

No April Fool's joke: this is the final reminder that tomorrow (Tuesday) I'll be doing a complimentary video webinar, "Sizing Up the Apple TV Opportunity," with Brightcove's Executive Chairman Jeremy Allaire at 1:30pm ET.

The hottest rumor in the video industry is that Apple will launch a TV and/or TV-like device (beyond the current Apple TV puck). But beyond the hype and speculation, Jeremy and I both believe there's compelling strategic logic; a device that is properly conceived could well be a game-changer with wide-ranging consequences. In this webinar we'll dive into the details, and leave plenty of time for audience Q&A. We don't have any agenda or inside knowledge; we just thought it would be fun and timely to share thoughts and have a discussion on this topic.

For anyone whose business would be impacted by an Apple television/device, it should be well worth your time.

  • Early Bird Registration Now Open for June 4th VideoNuze Online Video Ad Summit; 13 Sponsors On Board

Early bird discounted registration is now open for the VideoNuze 2013 Online Video Advertising Summit on Tuesday, June 4th in NYC. This will be the 3rd VideoNuze Ad Summit; last year, 350+ executives from around the video ecosystem of content providers, agencies, brands, technology companies and others attended.

I'm especially delighted to announce that 13 industry-leading companies are on board as sponsors. These include Premier Partners Adap.TV, Akamai, Auditude (Adobe), TubeMogul, ValueClick and YuMe; Headline Partners Altitude Digital, BlackArrow, Collective, Innovid, LiveRail and Videology, plus Branding Partner EXPO. All of these companies play critical roles in the dynamic online video advertising world and I am incredibly grateful that they've decided to be a part of the Ad Summit.

This year's Ad Summit will occur just after the Digital Content NewFronts and during the traditional TV upfronts. It's a time of year when advertisers and media buyers are scrutinizing their choices and deciding how best to reach their target audiences with tens of billions of dollars of spending. These decisions are more complicated than ever as audiences are fragmenting, content choices proliferating, and viewing devices multiplying. The opportunities to reach and engage audiences are more numerous than ever.

And this is why I believe the Ad Summit is so valuable. It's an immersive day of learning and networking with industry leaders from around the ecosystem. Through a series of presentations, panels, fireside chats and demo's, attendees gain strategic insights, useful data and practical lessons. For anyone who needs to understand the online video ad business and the broader tectonic shifts underway in video, it's a must-attend event.  I'll be sharing more about our amazing group of speakers and sessions in the coming weeks.

I hope to see you on June 4th!

  • Reminder: Sizing Up the Apple TV Opportunity Video Webinar on April 2nd

A reminder that on Tuesday, April 2nd, Brightcove Chairman & CEO Jeremy Allaire and I are going to present a complimentary video webinar, "Sizing Up the Apple TV Opportunity."

There have been infinite rumors about the idea of Apple launching its own television or "television-like" device (beyond the current Apple TV). In the webinar, Jeremy and I are going to delve into the details of why Apple might launch this type of product, what features and benefits it might actually have, how it would differentiate from competitors' products, how it might affect the ecosystem, and what challenges Apple would face trying to make it successful.

Though we both believe an Apple TV device could be a game-changer, the webinar will be "hype-free" and focused on the logic of this product. We have no particular agenda other than to try shedding some light on this topic. For anyone in the ecosystem who would be impacted by an Apple television/device, it promises to be an engaging, worthwhile session.

  • Sizing Up the Apple TV Opportunity: A Complimentary Video Webinar on April 2nd

I'm delighted to announce that Brightcove Chairman & CEO Jeremy Allaire and I are going to present a complimentary video webinar, "Sizing Up the Apple TV Opportunity," on Tuesday, April 2nd at 1:30pm ET.

The prospect of Apple launching its own television or "television-like" device (beyond the current Apple TV) has been one of the hottest rumors in the video industry. But while there has been lots of hype around it, there's been little strategic discussion of why Apple might launch this type of product, what features and benefits it might actually have, how it would differentiate from competitors' products, how it might affect the ecosystem, or what challenges Apple would face trying to make it successful. Our one-hour webinar will focus on exactly these types of questions.

Jeremy and I have both written extensively about the prospects for an Apple television/device and (examples here, here, here) and we believe that like so many previous Apple products, if the device is properly conceived, it could well represent a game-changer with profound industry impact. That said, the webinar will be a "hype-free" zone where we'll rationally delve into the details, while also providing ample time for Q&A. There are no agendas at work; Jeremy and I merely thought it would be timely to try shedding some light on this topic. For anyone in the ecosystem who would be impacted by an Apple television/device, it promises to be an engaging, worthwhile session.

  • VideoSchmooze [VIDEO]: Industry Executives Share Insights on Multi-Platform Success

Below is the full video of last week's VideoSchmooze session, "Cracking the Code on Multiplatform Success," which included Peter Dolchin (VP, Viacom Media Networks), Jason Forbes (EVP, zeebox), Ran Harnevo (SVP, AOL On Network), Chris Smith (VP, Collective), with Olivier Manuel (Principal, Accretive) moderating.

The group covered a lot of ground, sharing insights on what their companies are doing with multi-platform and how they view multi-platform unfolding. Among the specific topics they discussed included:

    - What is the definition of a "TV" in the online video age?

    - What do marketers want - unified measurement for media buying, or separation by platform? And what do incumbent linear networks and upstart online-only programmers want?

    - What is the difference between "TV Everywhere" and "Video Everywhere?" How are new programmers challenging incumbents to force more audience fragmentation and how is the ad community valuing this programming?

    - Can online-only originals be financing solely on ads or do they need a dual revenue stream with subscriptions, like cable?

    - Does premium content that was produced for the web get TV-style premium CPMs or will it be considered low-cost web content? How important is targeting matter and what other factors matter?

    - Do ad formats need to be different on TV, mobile and online?

    - How can business models align with user behaviors, and who's succeeding in doing this today?

    - What lessons does mobile, with the dominance of iOS and Android, offer to connected TV space? Will a "connected TV operating system" emerge and if so, who will drive that?

    - How does social help the discovery process and combat DVR usage?

    And much more!

  • VideoSchmooze [VIDEO]: Top Wall St. Analysts Debate Industry's Tectonic Changes

Below is the full video of the opening session at last week's VideoSchmooze, which featured 3 of Wall Street's top pay-TV/broadband/media/advertising analysts, Laura Martin (Needham & Co.), Craig Moffett (Sanford Bernstein) and Michael Nathanson (Nomura) along with me moderating. The group had a spirited discussion that was packed with data and touched on virtually every major topic industry. Some of the highlights include:

    - The evidence that there is a gap of approximately 600K-800K U.S. households per year that are either cord-cutters or cord-nevers and what's causing this.

    - TV networks' strategy to protect existing revenue streams and not have online delivery undermine their business models.

    - Implications of mobile video usage on traditional TV usage.

    - Changing consumer viewing behaviors and adoption of new devices, particularly among younger audiences, and what this means for the TV ecosystem.

    - The runaway cost of sports rights and whether this will drive more cord-cutting and cord-nevering.

    - How upstart programmers like YouTube can succeed with niche content approaches.

    - How TV's upfront advertising will change due to online video alternatives.

    - What's ahead in 2013.

    And much more.
