Capitalizing on Mobile as the First Screen [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]
Mobile video is growing fast, but monetizing it fully is a work in progress. At the recent Video Ad Summit, participants on the “Capitalizing on Mobile as the First Screen” session included Justin Fadgen (VP, Business Development, Beachfront Media), Kevin Hein (U.S. Industry Lead, Technology and Telecom Vertical, Facebook), Manny Puentes (Chief Technology Officer, Altitude Digital) and Blake Sabatinelli (GM, Newsy) with Anna Bager (SVP, Mobile and Video, IAB), moderating.
Particular challenges for mobile video that the panelists raised included ad/video load times, a limited window to gain the viewer’s attention, standardized measurement, consistent user experiences and the growing role of data. The panelists also discussed the opportunities and challenges around distributed video models on social platforms and how much effort is required to optimize each, among other topics.
The conversation balanced perspectives from the advertiser, publisher, platform and technology perspectives really well. Mobile video has gained a lot of usage, but it’s clear that it’s still early days in fully monetizing it.

What Works in Social for Mobile Video and Why All Mobile Marketers Should Care
Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 9:57 PM ETPosted by:Jeremy Ostermiller
CEO and Founder, Altitude DigitalMobile video is currently the fastest growing digital ad category, according to eMarketer, and is expected to bypass desktop by the end of this year. While large traditional publishers are quickly reimagining themselves in mobile environments, the massive shift is actually being led by popular social media platforms.
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, SnapChat and Instagram are all investing heavily in mobile video, and for good reason: mobile video ads drive more engagement and are very effective in influencing purchase intent. Marketers undoubtedly want to take advantage of that kind of ad performance, especially with consumers spending more time using mobile devices than watching TV.Categories: Advertising, Mobile Video, Social Media

The True Cost of Ad Blockers for Users and Publishers
Wednesday, May 13, 2015, 8:31 AM ETPosted by:Jeremy Ostermiller
CEO and Founder, Altitude DigitalThere is a tragedy of the commons brewing in the online ecosystem. While online consumers dislike online ads enough to deploy ad blockers at an exponential rate, the vast majority of publishers rely on ads to bring content to these same users for free. If ad blocking software adoption continues to grow, what will the true cost be for each party?
We all get it - ads can detract from the user's experience. Tivo and DVRs gave television viewers a way to circumvent advertising through "ad zapping." As consumer behaviors shift to online, ad blockers have now given internet users a similar option. They simply stop requests to specified ad servers or restrict certain page elements from loading onto sites. Unless an ad meets certain criteria or the publisher pays for their site to be "whitelisted," the ad is blocked from the end-user. This includes pre-roll, mid-rolls, interstitials and any ads that are deemed non-static.Categories: Advertising

Is it Finally Time for Programmatic to Join the March Madness Party?
Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 8:18 AM ETPosted by:Jeremy Ostermiller
CEO and Founder, Altitude DigitalGo to nearly any online media conference these days, and it feels like half of the sessions inevitably touch on programmatic ad buying and selling. Programmatic ad buying technology has existed for nearly half a decade, but still, the term gets a lot of attention as if it’s the new idea. And despite all the hype and conversation, it's pretty clear that the term itself, "programmatic," still scares away certain folks, especially those at the ultra-premium end of our industry.

Altitude Digital Lands $5 Million to Build Out Visualtising, A Video SSP
Anyone working in or around the video ad tech space knows how incredibly crowded and well-funded it is. So, when a couple of weeks ago I noticed that a company I was only mildly familiar with, Altitude Digital, announced it had raised $5 million, I was intrigued. While not a blockbuster-sized round, financings of this size signal that the investors, after having done their customary due diligence, see some "white space" still available to operate in. To learn more, I recently spoke to Devin Yeager, Altitude's COO, and Joe Salvador, VP of Video Operations.
Denver-based Altitude started up about 4 years ago as a display ad rep firm, but 2 years ago began building its own technology. More recently, Altitude has expanded into video, creating a new division called Visualtising. As a whole, the company is now processing about 12 billion display and video ad impressions per month. Altitude currently has 20 employees and is looking to double in size this year. It was also #54 ranked on Inc. 5000 list last year. Expanding Visualtising is the main purpose of the new financing.Categories: Advertising, Deals & Financings
