Reaching Audiences at Scale: Will TV Succeed in the Digital Age? [AD SUMMIT VIDEO]
One of the most interesting panel discussions at the recent Video Ad Summit was “Reaching Audiences at Scale: Will TV Succeed in the Digital Age?” which included Adam Gerber (SVP, Client Development & Communications, ABC), Mike Germano (Chief Digital Officer, VICE Media), Melissa Kihara (Global VP of TV & Video Products, Xaxis), Bob Toohey (President, Verizon Digital Media Services) and Lorne Brown (Founder and CEO, Operative) moderating.
It’s no secret that video viewing is fragmenting and linear TV is declining as new video sources proliferate and behaviors change. Still, TV networks are running fast, distributing programs in new ways, investing heavily in data to better enable targeting by advertisers and leveraging social media to better engage viewers.
As Adam pointed out, research suggests that scale in long-form ad-supported online viewing is dominated by TV networks. But as he also pointed out, scale in data and audiences is dominated by platforms like Facebook and Google. This is one of the key sources of tension for advertisers - how to combine the best of both, to achieve scaled, targeted, efficient, effective, trusted advertising in premium video?
The panelists agreed that for lots of reasons the market is nowhere close to reaching this nirvana state. They explored all the reasons why, along with things that are being done to move the ball forward. For anyone trying to better understand how TV is evolving in the digital age and what role it will play, it’s a fascinating discussion.

VideoNuze Podcast #329: New Data Shows Continued Evolution of TV and Video
I'm pleased to present the 329th edition of the VideoNuze podcast with my weekly partner Colin Dixon of nScreenMedia.
There was lots of data this week showing the continued evolution of TV and video, with viewers taking further control of their experiences. On this week’s podcast we discuss some of the most relevant findings. We start with Nielsen’s Total Audience Report, which among other things highlighted a 13% year-over-year decline in linear viewing by 12-17 year-olds and SVOD pulling even with DVRs in U.S. household penetration. Separate, Nielsen also gave a glimpse of its ability to track viewership in SVOD services this week, citing Netflix's season 4 premiere of "Orange is the New Black" as attracting 6.7 million viewers, which would make it the second-most watched show on cable.
Nielsen also noted the increasing role of connected TV devices, a point that new Magid research also emphasized. Colin and I agree that the virtuous cycle of proliferating connected TVs, strong SVOD content and robust broadband infrastructure are contributing to a leveling of the playing field in the living room between OTT and pay-TV.
A key ingredient in OTT’s rise is delivery quality, and Colin also touches on new research he did for Verizon Digital Media Services that reinforces viewers’ intolerance for lower-quality experiences. Colin will be doing a webinar next Wednesday, further digging into his findings.

thePlatform and Verizon Digital Media Partner for Full Online Video Solution
Cloud-based online video publishing company thePlatform has partnered with Verizon Digital Media Services to help drive multi-screen video delivery for pay-TV operators and content providers. Under the deal, VDMS services have been integrated with thePlatform's mpx video management system, forming a solution that will be jointly sold. The primary benefit is streamlined online video workflow which can be managed from a unified console.
Key to the integration is Verizon's single-format video acquisition and distribution capability, which is primarily attributable to VDMS's acquisition of upLynk last November. upLynk enables content to be encoded one time, with the resulting adaptive stream working across all devices, thereby reducing complexity. upLynk complements the EdgeCast content delivery network which Verizon also acquired late last year.Topics: thePlatform, Verizon Digital Media Services
