  • Jon Miller, News Corp. Chief Digital Officer to Speak at ELEVATE Conference

I'm delighted to announce that Jon Miller, News Corp. Chief Digital Officer and Chairman/CEO of its Digital Media Group, will speak at ELEVATE: Online Video Advertising Summit, on Tuesday, June 7th in NYC. Jon will participate in a fireside chat with David Kenny, President of Akamai Technologies (and former Chairman and CEO of Digitas), following David Kenny's opening mini-keynote. The title for the mini-keynote and fireside session is "Toward Digital Dollars: The State of the Market for Premium Online Video."

Jon is one of the most experienced digital media executives in the world and it is an honor to have him participate in ELEVATE. In particular, the topic that he will address could not be timelier. Producers of premium video content are singularly focused on how to optimally monetize their content on the burgeoning online and mobile video platforms. As a board member of Hulu - and with his numerous other experiences - Jon has unique insights on the topic. In addition, News Corp. has been one of the most aggressive investors and participants in online and mobile video and so the lessons and best practices Jon will share will be invaluable.

  • Senior Comcast, ESPN, Turner Executives to Discuss TV Everywhere's Game-Changing Role at ELEVATE

I'm delighted to announce that TV Everywhere's game-changing role in the TV and advertising ecosystems will be the topic of a marquee panel of cable industry executives at ELEVATE: Online Video Advertising Summit on Tuesday, June 7th in New York City. The panel, which I'll moderate, is titled "TV Everywhere: Game-Changer for Premium Online Video and Advertising" and includes:

    • Jeremy Legg - SVP, Business Development and Multi-Platform Distribution, Turner Broadcasting System
    • David Preschlack - EVP, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Disney & ESPN Networks Group
    • Matt Strauss - SVP and General Manager, Comcast Interactive Media

As I've written since it first burst onto the scene almost 2 years ago, TV Everywhere is the most significant initiative in the TV industry today because it aims to untether all of the most popular programs from cable TV networks that have traditionally been locked to the set-top box in the TV room, making them available on myriad connected and mobile devices. In this respect, TV Everywhere is a strategic imperative for the pay-TV industry; as new entrants like Netflix, Hulu Plus and others have strongly embraced delivery to connected and mobile devices, they have raised the competitive bar for all others.

  • Complimentary Webinar: Unlocking the Value of Video Content Libraries

Please join me for a complimentary webinar on Tuesday, May 3rd at 11am PT / 2pm ET, as Colin Dixon, senior partner at research firm The Diffusion Group, Mark Lemmons, CTO of Thought Equity Motion and I discuss how media companies can unlock the tremendous value in their video content libraries.

It's no secret that to date most of the monetization any particular video will generate will occur in the relatively short-term after its initial release. A combination of technical and business reasons have conspired to constrain the total potential ROI.

  • VideoNuze Report Podcast #91 - Mar. 11, 2011

I'm pleased to present the 91st edition of the VideoNuze Report podcast, for March 11, 2011.

In this week's podcast, Daisy Whitney and I discuss YouTube's acquisition of independent online video producer Next New Networks. As I explained in my post earlier this week, while it's tempting to see Google/YouTube becoming a content creator itself with the deal, instead I think of the move as taking a page from the cable industry's early playbook. YouTube is trying to play the role of "strategic catalyst" for online video creators, similar to what early cable TV operators did for early cable TV networks. Daisy doesn't see it quite the way I do however, which might suggest I'm giving YouTube more credit than they deserve. We'll see how it plays out over time.

Then we talk briefly about "ELEVATE: Online Video Advertising Summit," a new 1-day conference I announced earlier this week. Note, just as I finish up inviting Daisy to participate, the gremlins attacked and the podcast recording unexpectedly stopped. For those of you interested in her response, she said "she'd be happy to join us, that is if she's not in Paris at the time." Ahhh, choices, choices.

  • Announcing ELEVATE: Online Video Advertising Summit, On Tuesday, June 7th In NYC

Today I'm very excited to announce ELEVATE: Online Video Advertising Summit, a new, one-day conference, which, as the name implies, will focus entirely on the dynamic online video advertising industry. The date of the conference is Tuesday, June 7th, during Internet Week in New York City.

I'm equally excited to share that my partner in ELEVATE is Marc Sternberg, who until recently was the President and COO of AlwaysOn, the highly respected technology industry conference/networking company. Marc has a wealth of event and sponsorship experience from organizing over 20 executive-level events at AO. He also has deep entertainment industry experience from 23 years on the publishing side of The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. Importantly, we share a common vision for the ELEVATE conference and our skills are extremely complementary to one another.

ELEVATE will be a must attend event for senior executives from brands, agencies, content providers/publishers, technology providers and others in the fast-growing online video ad ecosystem who are eager to see it grow and mature. Marc and I intend to work closely with key industry thought-leaders to attract the right participants, create the most informative sessions and enable the best networking so that attendees have the highest-impact experience. We see ELEVATE as a joint venture with online video ad leaders who understand that a rising tide lifts all boats.

  • Mixing It Up With Mark Cuban At MIT

Last night's panel at MIT with Mark Cuban, boxee CEO/founder Avner Ronen and Akamai CEO Paul Sagan and yours truly, moderated by Prism's Woody Benson, was a freewheeling affair, with lots of controversy and plenty of humor. The topic was "IPTV: The Scrum for the Last Six Feet" and I think we covered all the relevant bases related to devices, over-the-top, content creation, sports and even what TV shows our kids are allowed to watch. For those wondering what compelled Mark to make the trek all the way to MIT, note the Mavs take on the Celtics at the Garden tonight. Next week I'll make the video available, and also highlight some of the fundamentally different ways Mark and I see the TV landscape unfolding.

  • Join Mark Cuban, Avner Ronen, Paul Sagan and Me for a Great Panel at MIT Next Thursday

If you're going to be in the Boston area next week, then please join Mark Cuban (Dallas Mavericks owner and head of HDNet), Avner Ronen (CEO/founder of boxee), Paul Sagan (CEO, Akamai) and me for a panel at the MIT Enterprise Forum on Thursday, Feb 3rd. The panel is moderated by Woody Benson, partner at Prism VentureWorks, who will do a 45-minute fireside chat with Mark prior to the panel.

The panel promises to be a freewheeling discussion of all the issues related to online video's invasion into the living room: who are the winners and losers? how will business models change? how likely is cord-cutting? And what is the timing for all of this change to play out? Needless to say it's a pretty dynamic group of panelists, so there will be no shortage of opinions exchanged and differences aired. For example, Mark and I recently had a spirited email debate over whether broadcast TV networks should allow Google TV and others to display their programs. I've written a couple of times that they should (here and here), while Mark has written (in his characteristically subtle way!) it's "probably one of the dumbest concepts ever."

  • On-Stage Interview With Netflix's Content Chief Ted Sarandos, Next Week in Miami Beach

Please join me in Miami Beach next Tuesday, January 25th when I'll be doing an exclusive one-hour interview with Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos at the annual NATPE Market conference. The session is sponsored by William Morris Endeavor. The NATPE Market conference runs from next Monday to Wednesday at the luxurious Fontainebleau Resort.

Ted is Netflix's point person for the company's lengthy list of recent content deals (e.g. EPIX, Disney/ABC, NBCU, Relativity Media, etc.) that have powered the popularity of Netflix's streaming service. Among the topics we'll discuss include how Netflix decides what type of content to pursue, how these deals are typically structured, how big Netflix's budget is for ongoing content acquisition, which connected devices are most popular for Netflix streaming use, which competitors he's most worried about, and what's on the roadmap for 2011 and beyond.

  • Results of Post-VideoSchmooze Reader Survey

Yesterday I posted a short 4-question survey following up last week's VideoSchmooze panel discussion of how connected and mobile devices are transforming the video landscape. Below are the results along with my short reactions plus how I would have voted on each question.

Question 1: Do you agree with the VideoSchmooze panelists that connected and mobile devices are mostly additive to the traditional pay-TV model, or do you think they are mostly disruptive to the traditional pay-TV model?

My reactions: Despite all the media coverage this year that new devices spell the demise of the pay-TV industry with rampant cord-cutting just ahead, readers seem to agree with the panel that instead they are mostly additive. While there's no doubt that that they present a significant challenge to incumbents, there is also early evidence that pay-TV operators are broadening their mindsets and trying to incorporate these devices into the experiences they offer (Comcast's new Android app unveiled yesterday is just the latest example). I would have voted "not sure/too early to tell" primarily because aside from the biggest pay-TV operators, there are a lot of others that aren't embracing new devices at all. It remains to be seen how aggressive these operators will be and as a result what devices' impact on the whole pay-TV industry will be.

In 2011 what will happen with online and mobile issues like cord-cutting/cord-shaving, over-the-top services growth, net neutrality, TV Everywhere rollouts, Netflix's Hollywood clout as it approaches 20 million subscribers, the rollouts of super-fast LTE/4G mobile networks, the tablet computing craze, advertising and paid monetization, and lots more? In the webinar Colin and I will discuss these and take a stand on how things will play out next year. There will be plenty of time for audience Q&A so bring your questions! As a little added incentive, early bird ticket holders only will be entered to win a new Samsung connected Blu-ray DVD player (model BD-C6500; I have one and it's awesome).
